The San Francisco 49ers announced today that they have cut five players from their roster and are down to 85 players on the current roster, they must trim it to 75 by tomorrow.
The most notable of the five cuts is QB Scott Tolzien, an undrafted QB out of the University of Wisconsin, others included in the cuts are: OL Al Netter, RB D.J. Harper, P Colton Schmidt and LB Joe Holland.
Tolzien was signed after the San Diego Chargers cut him and has been on the roster the past two years, but appeared to regress this year and did not play in the third preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings. Rookie B.J. Daniels appeared to overtake him as the third quarterback and his fate was sealed when the Niners signed QB Seneca Wallace this past week.
This may not be the end of the line for Tolzien as he has practice squad eligibility, but being let go in the first cuts may jeopardize that.
San Francisco will have to cut or trade 10 more players from their roster by tomorrow, Tue. Aug. 27th at 1 p.m. and then five days later will have to dwindle their roster to 53 with an eight person practice squad as well.
